The Hogy Squid: Make Your Own!

by Andy Nabreski

I’ve always been fascinated with fishing lures, and I’ve also always been interested in tinkering and tweaking them. To me, one of the things that attracts me to fishing is the constant experimentation that is necessary to be successful. In order to consistently catch fish, you need to switch things up and present the proper bait at the proper time in the right location.

In my local waters of Vineyard Sound here in Massachusetts, one the main forage items for game fish in the Spring is squid. Each year countless numbers of them enter the Sound early in the season, where they will spawn and then die. Local game fish such as stripers and fluke take advantage of this virtual all-you-can-eat buffet, and if there’s one thing they can’t resist, it’s a squid.

These local squid are quite large, sometimes exceeding 18 inches in length. There are several squid imitation lures available on the market, but none of them are big enough to effectively imitate those large adult squid that striped bass go bonkers for. For quite some time I’ve been looking for an artificial that could mimic these “Nemos” and the solution came to me last winter. I was taking a good hard look at a 14-inch amber-colored Hogy. The profile of this large soft plastic not only resembles a baitfish, it is also quite similar to that of a large squid. After a few quick modifications I knew I was on to something worthwhile; the Hogy Squid was born.    Continue reading

Commercial trawlers slaughtering thousands of striped bass off the Outer Banks

Sent in by alert SJ reader Kevin Job from VA…thanks pal

Commercial fishermen trawling off of the Outer Banks of North Carolina are slaughtering thousands of striped bass in “culling” operations and tossing them overboard trying to keep larger stripers and remain under their 50 fish limit.

Both recreational anglers and smaller operation commercial fishermen have been aghast at the actions of the trawlers who are wiping out massive schools of stripers and discarding smaller fish to stay under the state 50 fish creel but maximize their profits.

A video of the striper carnage has been posted on You Tube showing some of the thousands of floating dead fish Continue reading

Jersey Shore Surfcasters Surf Day

The Jersey Shore Surfcaster’s Fifth Annual Surf Day is coming to Brookdale Community College on February 19. The day will offer surfcasters information-laden seminars, multiple custom plug builders, local tackle shops and industry representatives and experts with information on relative equipment.

The JSS works hard at giving great seminar speakers to the NJ/LI/Pennsylvania surfcasters. This year our three featured speakers are all high quality surf fishermen, tops in the game of surfcasting. First there is Toby Lapinski from Connecticut. He is a life long surfcaster, knowledgeable, well-traveled, organized and legit trophy hunter. Come listen to his seminar on his preparation and approach for catching big bass. Next there is Dave Anderson from Rhode Island; he builds a great line of custom plugs named Surf Asylum, which stripers take a fancy to. He will be speaking on “Plug Modifications: From Color to Depth to Action and Where and When to use them.” It will be an information packed seminar. Our third speaker is author Eric Burnley, from Delaware, he will lecture on fishing for red drum and striped bass from the barrier islands of Virginia, and the Outer Banks.

Surf Day runs from 9:00 a.m.-4:30 a.m. The cost is $10, kids under 10 are free. Every kid goes home with a nice door prize.

All the information that you would need, including seminar schedule, speaker profiles, directions and more can be found at www.jssfishingclubsurfday.com

And yeah, Surfcaster’s Journal will  be there 🙂

IGFA

Catch-and-release anglers and conservationists; you asked for it and you got it. The International Game Fish Association has added a new 100% release category to its world records section beginning in 2011.

Based on length rather than weight, the new IGFA’s All-Tackle Length Record category will make 60 freshwater and 67 saltwater species eligible for new world records while requiring the fish to be returned to the water alive after measurement. With 127 new world record vacancies becoming available on January 1, the IGFA’s World Records office is expecting a flurry of competition Continue reading

Everything is not always black and white

Some things I have to get off my chest as we are embarking on some new ( and scary at least for me) things here at Surfcaster’s Journal. We have few more announcements to make in next few weeks, so stay tuned for them.

First, the support we got not only from our readers but from our advertisers has been nothing short of humbling. Yes, we work hard at making this the best darn publication but there are so many hours in the day we can devote to it. Any more time spent in front of the PC and I think Da Boss and Da Wife might be equally Continue reading

Where is Roger?

CT Matt has reminded me of something …that we hid Roger in the issue 5 of the Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine. But since Matt probably already found him we will disqualify  him for this contest…thanks Matt…..lmao

So lets start the early Easter hunt.

We hid this picture of the head of our editor Roget Martin somewhere inside the pages of issue #5 of the Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine. It could be buried in the text, hidden within  photograph or imbedded in the cover….it’s there, trust me.

They just told me where it is today.

The first dude that finds Roger and correctly post on this thread page # and were within the page is Rogers head located will win this beautiful darter lure courtesy of Choopy Lures.

Happy Hunting

UNIMOG

Coming up in the March issue of the Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine…..a beach buggy that is truly a labor of love between a surfcaster and his ride….wait until you read about all its features, every single one was incorporated into the vehicle to help in either catching fish or providing comfort on the beach.

Full 10 minute video will be released to coincide with article publication…for now enjoy the short version

Suggestions

As many of you know, STRIPERTHON 2010 was possibly the largest participating catch and release contest in the country with over 1300 participants. Yes, the fact that each blog member is automatically entered is not lost on me. We know what we have and we are not looking for a pat on the back  but instead….

We want to hear from you suggestions and ideas of how to improve the contest in the future. We want to know if you think we should even have the contest in the future. We understand that cameras are rarely close by when you need them and buddy is usually cursing you out when you battling a moose instead of getting camera ready but these are the breaks we as surfcasters deal with every night. The point here is to promote catch and release in general, to maybe give a little incentive to those who need it when it comes to consideration of releasing a big fish. Maybe someone will get inspired by seeing all the big fish that were released and entered in the contest. We also feel that it encourages a proper release to insure that the fish is sent back in good conditions. There are a lot of good things here, or at least the idea is good, what we like to hear is some suggestions of how to make it better.

Remember, we might be giving away ton of stuff and producing a subscription free mag and blog but without you, this thing really doesn’t work. We want you feedback on how to make this better, from video, to stories, to contests and yes ,even giveaways. On today’s menu is the contest

Reel service

Many of you are probably wondering if you should self-service your Van Staal reels or send it to Oklahoma to be serviced?

For someone like me who has two left feet and all thumbs, the self-service thing is not an option. I still remember when I took apart a small Penn 940 bait caster to clean many years ago and then had to bag it and mail it to Penn begging them to put it back together. Granted VS has a lot less part but I haven’t found a  nut I couldn’t strip yet or handle on anything I couldn’t break. So my reels are getting serviced…but did you know that you can do it locally?

Many of you know that Pat Abate at River’s End in CT does the VS servicing for last few years. Now you have another option as Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk ,NY is doing a whole shebang too, from just cleaning and maintenance to full servicing. Either one of these shops is stocked with fantastic people who care about your business and I wouldn’t hesitate to send my reels to either one…

And now for the winner of Hansom Pliers….

the winner is Bryan C… bchurch1183@gmail.com

Congrats

You have 5 days to email us your shipping address at info@surfcastersjournal.com
