Guppy Lures…yes we have them and yes, we will give you a chance to win them

Every year, once the holidays are passed, I hear the same thing. My friends complain about shows being boring, that show is too far to drive to, this one has lousy speakers, and on and on. Granted, I get engaged in this conversation too on occasion. But then I thought about something else..

Few years ago I went to Asbury Park Fishing Club annual Flea Market. I will be first to admit that I don’t know many players in this industry (that non-social thing rears its ugly head once again). Yes, I been invited to many pre-show parties and even more after show dinners or drinks. I have yet to attend one. Call me silly but I love getting home, as fast as possible once the show is over.

This might have been my first year at Asbury. This was in the days before SJ and during the time plug craze was raging. No one really wanted books, all they wanted was plugs, plugs and more plugs. So instead of just being ignored at my table I walked around and got to meet Ray Smith, bunch of NJ plug builder and one guy that came down the Jersey all the way from Massachusetts. That fellow was Wayne Hess, maker of Guppy Lures. Continue reading

Let’s get the BIG news out first.

The winner of super-duper Commando CUBE Surf bag, courtesy of Commando Surfcasting is…John B, xmako@verizon.net

John, you have 5 days to contact us with your shipping address at info@surfcastersjournal.com.

EBooks..I been thinking about this a lot lately. I can’t believe how quickly is world changing around us. Borders is gone and today Barnes and Noble announced that they are looking to spin off the Nook into a separate company I guess…before they go belly up too. Amazon is killing them all. And now that sales of eBooks are eclipsing the sales of paper book, I don’t think we will ever go back to the way we were. Continue reading

Do you feel like writing?

It is about time to get up in the morning and feel good about being a NY Giants fan. Funny story…my wife was on the Amazon.com two months ago looking at stuff to spend money on. Hmmm, why does this sounds familiar? She asks, who is this guy Cruz from NY Giants? I said, no one other than your son’s favorite player in the whole world. This is before anyone knew who he was…but since my son blogs about sports for a year already, he knew and loved the potential. So she gets him an authentic jersey. Let’s just say kid hasn’t taken the thing off since Christmas…Cruuuuuuuuuuz

Sometimes we post entry on the blog, asking you about the stuff you want us to feature in the magazine. Today, we are asking for readers to get involved and pitch us the stories that they would like to write themselves. You might be chummy with a plug builder, you might know an old-timer that fished with Woolner. You might be a brilliant surfcaster who can take apart strategies Continue reading

SJ ushers 2012 in style, by giving you a chance to win a Cube Surf Bag from Commando Surfcasting

I want to wish all the readers of the Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine and the Blog a Happy and Prosperous New Year. We are going to usher this 2012 in style here at Surfcaster’s Journal.

First, we have a new issue in the works which should be ready in few days. Second, after two years of waiting, and scrambling to find options for you guys to read the SJ Magazine on your IPads and IPhones, it looks like we finally have an answer to our prayers. It’s not a perfect solution yet as you can’t go to www.surfcastersjournal.com and view it on your Apple device yet. But if you go to  http://issuu.com/surfcasters_journal/docs and you can browse through all the issues on your Ipad. I have to say this. I was the biggest “why would you buy Ipad?” and “what is the point of that tablet?” guy I know. But I bought it for my kids for Christmas because ,well, I love my kids. And to me honestly, money has no other purpose other than to make their lives better. My wife included of course. But I changed my tune after reading two books in two days on Ipad and watching some videos.

Holy shit, that thing is sick! Sorry if I am late to the party but I am here now. Apple rules. I am working on a eBook which will only be available for reading on tablets very soon. Kind of excited about it..

But not as excited as I am about how are we going to kick off 2012 at the Surfcaster’s Journal Blog. By giving you a chance to win this sick Commando CUBE Surf Bag.

Win a Heavy Needlefish from Super Strike Lures

I hope you enjoyed watching the video we featured yesterday on the blog. John truly is one of a kind when it comes to explaining how and why things work. Too bad his background as a Brookhaven National Lab scientists prevents me from putting a GPS under his truck and finding out where he fishes. The last thing I need is the boys from Homeland Security at my doors…lol

And no, I am not hiding that delicious looking Commando Cube Surf Bag…ok, I am . But I will give you a chance to win it in a day or two. What a way to get into a New Year Continue reading

Special gift

Yes, the Christmas is over. But we keep delivering gifts in one form or another.

We announced the winners of our STRIPERTHON 2011 Catch and Release contest. We announced the winners of AOK, SS, Rod Vault and Commando Surfcasting giveaways…and we got more coming

But first, a special gift. A 20 minute interview that is worth its weight in gold, if there was such a thing. Some of you will learn more listening to John speaks then you ever did watching a fishing video. And if you haven’t bought John’s new book yet, Fishing the Bucktail, you will after you watch this.

But this is not about a book, or egos. Continue reading

This and that

Today is the second anniversary of the Issue # 1 of the Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine. Few guys thought you guys deserved your own publication. Most though we were just plain crazy. Hell, I still think we were nuts to do this.

What you see today, is a result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people. Our editors, columnists, writers, Tommy the Art Director and also many of you who made suggestions, and gave advice over these two years. I am not sure what the future will bring but I do have one wish. A hope that more of you will contact us at info@surfcastersjournal.com with an idea you might be interested in putting on paper. We are always on a lookout for fresh voices, new ideas. We don’t only cover how-to but instead we try to cover the sport of surfcasting as a lifestyle. Catching the fish is truly just a bonus some days. You might be a close friend of  a lure builder, you might have something unusual happen to you while fishing or maybe you visited  a place you want to tell us about. Our doors are always open…

This being a holiday season, I am sure many of you have a Christmas Wish List, either a  things you are looking to get as gifts or something you are buying for yourself. Care to tell us what is on your list?

My list is short. A trip somewhere warm where there are some warm water species close to the shore would be all I really want. I have more tackle than I can use, so anything warm would do. I am not a big fan of NY winters. After breaking three 7 foot rods in 24 hours last week I will look into replacing some. Story for another day..lol

One note, our STRIPERTHON 2011 contest, Junior Category in particular. We are not sticklers for rules here with kids. We will extend to this weekend for you to send us any picture of your child with this year’s surf caught fish, any species. Send it to info@surfcastersjournal.com. We’ll take a vote next week

and last not but definitely not least

ZeeBaas is having their first self-service seminar on Sat, Dec 10 at 9:00 AM

It will be held at their shop 335 Benton street, Stratford CT

Ron will be demonstrating self service of the reel and answering questions.

He will be going over the different lube options, how to use the new tool kit they just came out with, and the different o-ring kits they now have.

As an added bonus, Gary Soldati will be there to brag about getting the first 50 with a lefty ZeeBaas!

Dreaming of other places

I don’t know how your fall is but mine is just an awful continuation of the last year’s one. No, wait, last fall had some good moments. This fall…I am still waiting. Few decent tides with Silver Fox that resulted in lots of small fish in Montauk. Locally?  I won’t even bother. It’s not for a total lack of effort either. Yes, I do fish a lot less these days but how can you not? Friday night I went out for an hour to Jones Beach only to find a chocolate milk looking water and no fish. Saturday I drove east and tossed live eels after seeing my partner nail a nice fish. Live Eels? Me? Holy crap, it’s been at least 5 years since I cast one. To add insult to injury we went back Sunday with live eels again and I got skunked again. About $100 in gas, 300 miles on my truck and not a bump. My friends didn’t do much better either. Yes, I know a spot where there has been a good bite. Yes I know its crowded to the point people are getting into fist fights. No thanks, I am not that desperate. What I am jonesing is to get my ass back to Cuttyhunk in spring. Many of you have read about our trip and emailed me about details ,info, logistics. I hope some of you went and had a ball.

Those of you that are catching, send us some pictures in for our STRIPERTHON 2011 contest

You know what we should do ?

We should book the whole place (all 8 rooms…lmao) in the spring for a weekend and grill till we can eat no more. Then we should hit the rocks and nail some slobs. Have like a SJ Invitational Cup weekend…the dude with biggest fish wins some cool prize,..or you can hop in water and revieve your cow like Chef Andrew is doing this spring at Cutty

Hey, you get to hang with us, we get to tell our wives we are “working” on promoting magazine….:-)

who is into it ? …lol
