Go East young man

You probably heard it but just in case you missed we will tell you about it. Montauk Classic weekend tournament this past weekend in Montauk was a awash in big fish. Which means that you will want to go there :-)…..this weekend. Of course it would have been better if you were there last weekend and caught those giant fish yourself. Or maybe you were there and like I, only caught fish smaller than your eels. That’s why my friends there are sharpies (like the tourney winners) and the rest of us.

And if you missed last weekend contest, there is another on tap this weekend. Paulie’s Bait and Tackle Tourney is happening this weekend. So sign up and good luck.

In case you are wondering , both cows were landed on lures. But not just any lures. They were both caught on the lures made by Super Strike. One on the new weighted Heavy N Needlefish and the other on the SS darter. Both caught within few minutes of each other, or I should say, weighted within few minutes of each other….yet caught in different locations. I am not surprised that they were caught on Super Strike Lures.

As I sat and interviewed Paulie on camera last week after the shop closed he must have said “Super Strike” two dozen times when talking about lures, what works, what he likes, what is staple, and on and on. Congrats to the anglers on their achievement and Super Strike lures makers Steve and Don Musso for providing the “tools” .

and now for some comic relief…at my expense , of course

We have one rule on our blog, we never make it about us. It is not a pulpit from which we make our legend grow. Instead we try to make it informational and educational place where you can check in, have a cup of java and start your morning. Or dream about Kim. Whatever rocks your boat.

But today I will make an exception because I have to answer the most often asked question when it comes to stuff I write for the mag and blog….how do you do it and where do you find time?

Let’s look at Monday…I can assure you that you will scratch your head and laugh at same time

4 30 to 5 30 AM

Returning emails on the home PC. Browsing quickly trough the few sites, more of a scan than anything else. Spilled coffee on pants but no time to change so I am on a LIRR platform with a  giant coffee stain on my you-know-what. What a great day to start a day

5 30 to 6 10 am

On LIRR writing on my small net book. Whatever pops in my head, either a blog entry for tomorrow, working on article. People are looking at me strangely. I am obviously a construction worker, I am dressed like one. Why is that man type like that, they snicker. Typing with one finger suuuuuucks

6 30 to 7 30 am

In front of the construction site, sitting on a sidewalk with a lot of other hardhats. Except I am the only one typing. I get weird looks from other trades as I sit there and type while they check out all the young moms from SoHo running around in their skin tight suits.

7 30 to end of the day

Working. Wrapping pipe and duct with fiberglass. This particular job is all on the knees as the pipes are feeding units on the ground. It will be like that for few months. Working on knees is killer but so is the mortgage payment.

Back on LIRR with a net book…trying to write but the DROID keeps going off. Fish info is coming but I got no time to fart never mind act on it. The chew is on at Montauk but the darn European trip my wife made me go on sucked up all the good graces at work. Trying to block the vision of big fish out of my head.

I open my truck at the Westbury LIRR station and almost puke. WTF ?????

I forgot to put rigged eels back into the freezer last night after a trip !! These suckers are two years old and they decomposed in one day. Fing decaying eel juices are running all over my trunk. Thank Lord for a mat in the back. The truck is undrivable without gagging. Trying not to puke as I am driving. I can’t imagine what a skunk smells like. I don’t think I want to know

Getting off the train and run and gun. First to home to pick up two bottles of cold water and then to middle school. Give water to my younger one along with lacrosse stick and take her backpack home. The older one is texting “what is for dinner” as he has to head back to volleyball soon. I text back, hang on, still haven’t made it past front door,

3 30

Serving the son a beef stew I made on Sunday for Monday. Unfortunately, I got engrossed in watching video editing training video on the MAC and let the stew burn a bit. It’s not bad but it has a bit of a burnt taste. He tells me he loves it and wants seconds. Go figure. Trying to sit and return emails but then I realize that I made a mistake. I have to go back to school and get my daughter as she has clarinet lessons ! Damn it

4 00 pm

She eats the stew and again, loves it. We bolt for 4 30 clarinet lessons. The wife usually does this but her new job is keeping her at work latter. Everyone is working more for less. We get there and dude tells me that the lesson will be late by ½. An hour….#$^*!@#!

4 30

Sitting in the waiting room with her while she is playing on my DROID. Typing on the net book but getting distracted by kids coming in and out dragging instruments. Finally its time and she goes in for a lesson

5 PM

I am in my customary place, sitting in the front seat of my truck and typing. Except, the mosquitoes swarm in and within 5 minutes I have 4 bites on my legs. Son of  a bitches. I have no other option then to abandon my quiet place and go back to waiting room with notebook in hand. The truck is full of mosquitoes.

5 30 to 6

Heading home and checking emails while driving. Yes., I am one of those annoying people who do this.

6 PM

Ok, the ‘official” start of  “my time”. Wife ate stew and loved it (I have no idea what is wrong with these people today). After a quick run to Dunkin Donuts I am at my desk. No time for MAC so PC gets fired up…lots of work to do

8 45 pm

After three straight hours of writing and emailing stuff to our Editor Roger my head falls on the desk. I haven’t got more than three hours of sleep since last Thursday, when I headed to Montauk. I don’t watch TV other then Giants game with my son, Law and Order and Boardwalk Empire with my wife. Occasionally I will watch Big Bang Theory and two and a half men. All in all, besides the Giants I might spend an hour in front of the TV a week. I get up off the desk and try to wake up. My face looks like an inverted keyboard as my head was plopped on it.

I sat next to my wife and watched some new show called Broke Girls or something like that. Who writes this shit and who thinks this is funny? Glad I caught the only the last 10 minutes of it. Two and a half man is on with Ashton Kutcher. I think he is a nice guy, I really do. All the movies I ever seen him in were awful so I don’t know what to expect. I miss Charlie. The show is awful, unwatchable. Did all the writers get fired with Charlie too? Oh well, say goodbye to another classic.

9 10…in bed alone. Wife and kids wait for Mike and Molly. Can’t make it, need sleep.

5 30 AM

Back on LIRR writing THIS

Can you say a hamster wheel?  🙂

And that was an “uneventful “ day for the most part. No one got hurt, I didn’t have to cook other then make pasta. The wife made lunches for kids and went to meet-the-teacher night at school. So when I don’t return your emails within few hours. I am probably busy,….writing.

    That’s life Z.
Same for me but I’m sneaking out now to get an hour and a half of fishing in before getting the kids off to school and then work.
Wish I could head east for a couple of days.

Zeno, drop Two and a Half Men. It’s best days are in the past. If you need to “invest” in a new comedy try Modern Family. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Keep up the good fight sir. I do railroad construction between about 50 hrs a week and also own a music recording studio on the side. I don’t think I’ve slept more than 4 straight hours a night in the last 10 years. Coffee keeps me going but it’s getting to the point that my pee smells like Starbucks Italian roast. Seriously…

Keep up the good fight Z. Things are tough out there and if you stop you might find your real job has been cut back and your expendable like I did when I asked for a few too many days off to go fishing.
As for everything else you do … you rock.

Thanks Zeno, you always manage more than your share of chuckles with your personal style of writing. I too am an admirer of SJ and what you and your crew do to provide us with so much. Kind of like a life perspective through the eyes of some seriously addictive fishermen. Keep it up!

Thanks Zeno!!! Im a gettin one right now! Im sure the rigged eel stench will subside after I read it for oh about the 50th time like I did your first book. I still keep it in my truck for reference and a good laugh when I feel like Im losing my head over a skunk. You have cut my learning curve in half at least and saved me years of mistakes. Enjoy your weekend!
