THE CHESAPEAKE CHRONICLES – Part 1 by Rich Trox

Let me first mention that we are burning midnight candles on ALL ends this week as I am pulling my hair out with show last minute prep while Tommy and Dave are doing the same trying to get a next issue up, which should be happening within the next 24 hours or so. So lets move away from talking about a show for a day and switch gears.

As many of you know, Rich Trox is one of the most brilliant minds we ever featured in SJ magazine. He recently moved to VA and has starting to write Chesapeake chronicles for noreast and he told me if my readers would enjoy it to post it on the blog.

But first , the winner of Super Strike Striper Day Special lures is

THE CHESAPEAKE CHRONICLES – Part 1

By Rich Trox

Part 1

Well it’s closing in on 2 years now since I pulled up my stakes on Long Island and replanted them down here in Chesapeake Virginia. It’s been an interesting transition, but one requiring a lot of time and effort, which unfortunately, hasn’t left me with a whole lot of time to go fishing. Until recently that is.

Now that my business is going fairly well and I’ve recovered from some of my setbacks, I’m finally getting around to learning my new area, from a fishing perspective. And it is quite a bit different from what I left behind. Quite a bit indeed!

After fishing Long Island waters for over 40 years, I just took for granted all that I had learned over that time. I had developed what my friend Billy the Greek calls “the sixth sense”, the ability to perceive conditions and dial in with surety. As moderator and content provider for noreast and other online publications, and through my own youtube channel, I’ve tried to pass forward as much knowledge as I could over the years. I’m not patting myself on the back here, I’m just setting the stage.

I have basically forgotten how much effort it took to get me to the point where fishing the waters of Long Island became second nature. Granted, fishing is a lifelong learning process and there is always something new to learn, but the basics are a long time gone in the rear view mirror for me and others who have been at it for a long time.

I was talking with John Skinner at one of noreast’s Christmas parties several years back, about some of the basic questions I get repeatedly asked on the surf board. I remember asking him “When was the last time you walked onto a beach and saw nothing but water”. He chuckled. That’s the way it is with anything that you do for a long time, you simply forget what it’s like to start with a blank slate and a piece of chalk. To quote Morpheus from the movie The Matrix “Fate it seems, is not without a sense of irony”.

Now that fate has delivered me to Chesapeake and I’m ready to fish, I realize that it’s a whole different ball game down here. And while I’m not exactly starting with a blank slate and a piece of chalk, I have a lot to learn and whole lot of new area to figure out. Oh, I’ve brought a lot of transferable skills from my days up north, to be sure, and have even applied some of them with success. But I still have a lot to learn.

As such, I thought it might be interesting to document the process through these writings and a series of videos on my youtube channel. The videos may show me catching fish at some point, but that won’t really be the point of the videos. There are a million videos on youtube of people catching fish already, besides I can’t afford a go-pro yet lol. What I’ll be focusing on is the process I use to learn my new area, what goes on inside my head, from the top down.

For starters, let me say that you guys on Long Island have it pretty good as far as the striped bass go. Sounds counter intuitive seeing as the Chesapeake Bay is the largest striped bass nursery there is, but believe me, you have it good.

Why you ask? Several reasons really, but the biggest reason is that the striped bass seasons up there are very predictable and you get a lot of shots at bigger fish. They basically do the same thing every spring and every fall. There may be variations in the bait patterns from year to year, and certainly the decline in stock biomass has been felt up and down the coast, but at the end of every year, they came west to east in the spring, and east to west in the fall. Very predictable. Not so down here, and I’ll cover this in detail as I go along.

To aid in my new fishing adventures I bought a kayak in the spring and have had a lot of fun fishing from it for a variety of local frying pan species but haven’t done anything too hairy chested with it yet, like venturing far out along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, otherwise known as the CBBT. Being that it’s only a 10 footer and I’m 6’1” and 200 lbs, I’m not overly confident in it handling the rougher stuff. I’m already on the market for a larger, more stable model and might take advantage of the end of season clearance sales and buy myself an early Christmas present. We’ll see.

So what’s different down here? Without over exaggerating, I’d say pretty much everything. The lingo, species, techniques, bait patterns, migration patterns, tides, access, AND THE WHOLE AREA. Throw in a few things that you would never expect also. So much to learn, so much to reconfigure, and not a great knowledge base to draw from either.

The last comment about knowledge base is not meant to be insulting, it’s just factual. Most people down here who fish have no idea of what they’re doing. This is a big boat fishery down here and surf fishing plays a distant second fiddle. So while I can’t speak too much about the boat guys, those who fish the surf and piers, for the most part, don’t seem to have a clue about what’s going on. And this from someone who admittedly doesn’t know the area well yet.

There are a lot of piers down here and I avoid them like the plague. To me, two is company and three is a crowd, so piers are basically a last resort. Besides, most of them cost money to fish from. But there are two that hold some promise to me, one of which I discovered today and both free. More on those later. Most of the people who fish piers throw out a line and hope something will bite. Then there are the few at the end who know what they’re doing, but don’t say much. On the shore, most everybody I’ve met knows very little about what they are doing or why they are doing it, but they are all very nice people. So inside info is going to be very hard to come by.

While I didn’t have a lot of time to fish my first year down here, and still don’t have a great deal of time to fish, the first thing I had to figure out was how to maximize the time I did have to spend. Even though I didn’t have a lot of time to spend actually fishing, there was an enormous amount of learning I could do in whatever spare time I could find. So the first thing I did was break down the basics into manageable parts and organize them. In essence, I became an internet fisherman. I created folders on my desktop with specific functions, folders in my browser’s [favorites] for the same reasons, and then defined what was going into them by making a list of topics I needed information on.

The list was pretty basic but helped organize my efforts into manageable chunks, and this is still an ongoing effort and will remain so for quite a while. The first thing I wanted to know is what species were available. For each species I was interested in I researched size range, habitat preferred, migration pattern, preferred baits and techniques. The next was bait patterns, what are the predominant baits, how to catch them, or the best places to buy them, etc. The third and most expansive is access. This one will keep me busy for a lot of years, but it’s also the most fun. I’ll explain how I go about this and what I’ve found so far, in more detail when I continue. I’ll also have some funny and interesting stories so,

Few new things..by Lou Caruso

Few new things ….

Less then a week to Striper Day. I’m very excited for this show. We here on Long Island have not had a good show in a number of years now. What I’m really excited about is there are some new products out there you may be interested in. They include both blanks and finished rods.

Last year during the Somerset Show, I received a call from a friend asking if I ever heard of a company called ODM. I honestly had to tell him I never heard of them. He proceeded to tell me about a rod they were selling. He said the rod was impressive, felt good and was going at a good price. I went to look at their website. The rod was the Frontier NFX Series. They were selling as a promotional item with no warranty. I dismissed them at once because, 1- no warranty and 2 – you could not acquire blanks. A month or so later I received a call from the owner Steve Youn. While speaking with him, he explained that the reason for no warranty was this was a limited run of rods and he was already working on a better design and would not have inventory for replacement of the old rods. He wanted to be sure to get the new rods perfect before releasing. He also told me he would contact me when he felt the rods were right so I could take a look. I kind of forgot about it once the fall run started. Then I got a call from a friend up in Conn. He had bought one of the rods and was fishing it up at Cape Cod Canal. Said it cast extremely well and had a ton of backbone. About a month ago I received a call from Steve. He sounded very excited about the new lineup and would I like to test them. I invited him to the shop. When he and his crew showed up, they were the nicest guys you would want to meet. After chatting for a while I realized we have the similar thoughts about the way a surf rod should be built including actions and weight ratings. We went to the water and he proceeded to put reels on his entire lineup of surf rods. He has two lines. Genesis and Frontier X. Both of these rods were very impressive. The Genesis is a more moderate action rod. Well balanced and cast very well with lots of backbone. The Frontier X is the Cadillac of the lineup. A moderate fast rod with a ton of backbone. These rods are light and responsive. After casting through the lineup I realized, if your throwing the Genesis 9’ or 11’ in the ¾-4 weight rating the rods felt the same. Same with the Frontier X. That is not something you find all the time. After casting, I had the pleasure of watching Steve cast the rods. (Geeze the man can cast)…. I noticed he was putting very little effort into his casts and the distance was incredible !!!!!.

Check out their website at: http://www.odmrods.com/index.html

You can also check out the rods in person and meet Steve at Striper Day.

Next up, are new blanks made by a company on the West Coast called Cousins. With the uncertainty of Lamiglas lately a fellow rodmaker worked with Cousins to design a blank that was similar to a Lamiglas GSB but improving on a few things. One was the fact that Lamiglas GSB’s are soft in the midsection. Get a good fish in strong current and that rod is bending right through the reel seat and down into the handle. The other is that like most graphite blanks, braid is not your friend. Cousins seems to have designed a blank which addresses both those issues and is light weight.. The blanks are softer in the tip yet has a strong midsection. To date, we have a 9’ Light action & Medium Action and a 10’ Light & Medium. They are working on an 11’ as we speak. I have high hopes for these blanks. I have put quite a bend in the tip, far more then I ever would fishing them and haven’t exploded one yet.

Lastly is a new surf blank from rod geeks. Last year while speaking with one of the owners, I asked him if he ever thought of building a blank with one handle and 2 tips. I expressed interest in a blank that had a moderate tip for normal beach fishing and a faster action tip for those days when you needed more distance to reach the fish when they were way out.  They decided to follow my suggestion and developed an 11’ rod with a Medium Power, Moderate Action tip rated 2-6 and Medium Heavy Power, Moderate Fast Action which is rated 3-8. I just received the first blanks last week and am building one now. I hope to be able to test it by the end of the week. These rods seem like they may be Ideal for Cape Cod Canal. It will also do well on the open beach on good days and those snotty 25-knot wind in your face days. The plan is for Rod Geeks to possibly do the same in 9’ and 10’. We will se. Check them out at:  http://www.rodgeeks.com/blanks/surf-rod-series/

ODM will be at Striper Day and I will have the Cousins blanks to check out along with the Rod Geeks rod. Stop by and check them out.

See you Saturday !!!!!!!

New videos

Few new videos we posted on our Youtube channel this week.  We are currently working on a new issue. There will be seven original videos embedded including four new installments of the  Surf Fishing 101 series , two reviews, including one of a shitty product, and also Lou we’ll have a video column this issue

Transporting your rod on a tailgate- with Lou Caruso

I have a mixed feelings about making these “buried in the sand” videos. To some people they prove nothing, to others they mean everything. I am kind of in between on this. Yeah, i am impressed when all the sand flushes out but yet, I think the more significant test is standing in the water and getting hit by a sandy wave, which I have to admit VR handled just fine in limited testing on my part.

Striper Day 2016

Striper Day 2016 is scheduled to take place exactly two weeks from today, so I figured it would be fitting to delve a little deeper about where, why, who and where.

I am going to repeat this few times in this blog post but all the show info is on show website, www.striperday.com

I think the first question and probably the one most difficult one to answer is why? Why in  the world do I need another thing on my plate? The answer is kind of simplistic but it’s true. We travel from New Jersey to Massachusetts each winter in search of surfcasters or to put it more accurately, shows where surfcasters gather.

The Surf Day in NJ is by far our favorite event to attend. It’s the only pure surf fishing show and the one we enjoy going to most. We get to hang out with readers, attend seminars and just spend a day talking nothing but surf fishing. Three day shows are very difficult to pull not only financially, but the time you need to allocate to them, that is why we don’t do that many. I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that we would love nothing more than to show up at a well attended surf fishing show in New York if somebody else would organize it. But I guess after years of waiting for that to happen, we decided to do it ourselves. Gathering from interest expressed on social media, it seems to me that this is something that is very much looked forward to, but we won’t know until that fateful day arrives.

Ok what is Striper Day ?DSC_71861.jpg

Striper Day will feature about 80 vendors of fishing equipment, from custom plug makers to rod builders, roof rack makers, tackle stores, apparel makers, authors, surf guides, custom bag makers, everyone associated with surf fishing will more or less be there. There is a long list on our website of all the vendors that are appearing in New York for the first time. Guys like Big Rock Lures, Flatlander bags, or Goo Goo plugs have never been to a show in New York before. In addition to them there will be few more local tackle stores, beach driving organizations and we will even have some kayak presence for those of you who likes to dabble in both.

What Else ?

Merry Christmas, Uncle Josh, Sebile Lures and other stuff

First I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Funny story…. I was just walking from my job and as I am walking through Kmart in Penn Station, I found about 10 jars of Uncle Josh pork rinds for about five bucks each and I grabbed them all. P1010003

Why?

Because Uncle Josh as of next year is stopping production on the pork rind line that we so love. Not hundred percent sure why, it seems to me that they need specific type of pork rind to make those and its not economical. I was told they have enough in stock for this year but after the current stock runs out they will not be produced anymore. Which is kind of upsetting considering I don’t use anything but the 240S or 70 S Uncle Josh pork rinds. I guess we will have to make adjustments. Those Otter Tails that Dave Anderson has written about in the past issue of the magazine might be the best replacement option. I’m not suggesting you stock up, what I’m telling you that I am certainly doing it. This way I can at least push the date when I have to worry about this years in the future. It would not surprise me one bit if we find that someone has jumped into the space and try to re-create a similar product.

One of these days I’m going to write details exactly what happened to me in the last few weeks, part of the reason why I was kind of absent. I have had not only one but two major computer failures and I let’s just say a lot of stuff is gone. In fact this is the first blog I’m writing by using a dictation software. Not sure why it took me so long to do it, because if any of you guys know me well, you know that I can’t type for shit. Blog can take me hours to type with one finger. The dictation software does not speak Cringlish either…major bummerqqs2w

But it’s Christmas time, and I don’t want dwell on the negatives. My family is good, my friends are good and from what I can see, a lot of our readers are still catching fish, which is awesome. I mean seriously balmy 70° on Christmas Eve? I don’t know about you if you’re working office but for a  construction guys, it’s awesome.20151223_091841

As I mentioned before I just returned from Costa Rica where I was invited to test new PENN Clash reels and bunch of other stuff. I will try to write a detailed blog about the experience and the products,  and  I  can’t wait to go back there again. This is my second trip to Costa Rica, the first one being with my buddy Ray. We  just bounced on the rocks for a week and had a great time. This time i spent few days on a boat with Patrick Sabile casting away at roosters and jacks. I will readily admit that I kind of enjoy being the only “ surf” guy on this trip. While everyone else was just happily trolling live bait I was at the bow casting my arm off. The good news is that the new PENN Clash is as good as advertised, new spider wire camo supposedly cannot be made fast enough for retail sales, and a really good news for those of you who love Sabile lures, they will be relaunching them next year at the price point that you really going to like. If I remember correctly instead of $35 dollars expect to pay about $19 for them. And they will come in more colors like mackerel , bunker, with reinforced hook hangers and more details on the lures. I think sometimes people forget that every line needs a refreshing every once in a while. Patrick told me he’s been making those lures for about 17 years now and since he partnered up with pure fishing, he now has an ability to make them more affordable and with better hardware..20151215_070840

And last but not least, the winner of the last weeks giveaway, a set of Charlie’s Graves Lures is Tony Politi. Congratulations Toni, you have 5 days to email us at info@surfcastersjournal.com with your shipping address.
