Crazy Alberto Knie – FISHING EQUIPMENT

Today’s blog is a little different than ones we usually feature here. Crazy Alberto Knie, Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine columnist and world renown fisherman wanted to be more of a Q&A then just a standard blog. So feel free to ask question and I will make sure that the Great One answers..lol

All kidding aside, Crazy Alberto will be doing a seminar at St Joseph’s College this Saturday at Patchogue Fishing show. Those of you that are in the area, stop by and say hi. Surfcaster’s Journal staffers will be there and so will Al at Tactical Angler’s table all day answering your questions when he is not doing his seminar.

Here is the info

The rest of Journal’s Crew will be in Providence, RI for RISAA , our last show of the season. So this weekend is your last chance to renew or subscribe at these shows and pick up a free shirt and discounted hoodies, hats and stickers. See you there

People often ask me about tackle, and think they have to spend a ton of money or having to buy the most expensive and the “best”. Well, everything is relative and you do not have to buy the best. What I am really trying to say is this

The $$$ price tag does not equate to the best. Let’s put things into perspective, you wouldn’t want to buy a Luxury Rolls Royce or convertible Ferrari and run it on the beach. That is just downright silly.

Before making the right investment, it is best to determined by the its applications and not by how deep your pocket is. Other things to take for consideration is maintenance and wear-and-tear because certain application can be demanding on the product. By understanding the equipment’s features, it will ultimately help you determine what the proper needs are.

So next time you ask anyone for advise, think about this first.

Chunkg, I understand what you are saying but its all relative and you really can not “judge” them by the way a person fish. The submergible reels are unique and it also applicable in many other faucets of fishing. Some people fish it in non-extreme situation (don’t go over their knees in the suds) but they boat fish / power jig for large pelagic monsters. Funny thing is… the same people also fish it in not so extreme places where an avid surfcaster would. All in all, I wouldn’t judge – the VS and ZeeBaaS are premium reels and it can be fished many areas and methods. 😉

How do you approach a new spot or new area and how do you go about learning that new spot or new area? Take for example, your experience in Florida, a totally new fishery for you, I imagine. How did you approach targeting such big fish ?

Jim. Thank you for the great question. I use my log books and duplicate similar conditions and applications regardless of where I fish. What I mean is this… Big fish shares common feeding patterns and behaviors. Although certain fish are unique in some ways… they still have to eat. The only thing I change / modify is the speed of the lures by matching the available baitfish in the area. The other thing is a must – fish in areas that is not often fished, fish late non-human hours and be persistent.

        Alberto,
Great response. When will you turn those log books into a best seller. Just looking at the pics, you can tell it’s well past beddy-time. 😉

Richard, I am sorry, been there and done that. The only solution you have is simple. Quit your job (which I don’t recommend), ask to change your schedule for that day or use what many others do…. Call in sick. 😉

Jim, When will I publish my log books? Hmmm… I am not sure if I want to do that because the data serves no purpose but for me. It’s personal, it’s a reflection of how I fish, it would also burn spots…. What do you think? 🙂

You sold me a 10 foot surf and jetty lami (XS 101 MS), over twenty years ago at the Campsite in Huntington. I spend my winters in south Florida now and thinking of using it down there. Don’t know If you’re familiar with Boynton Inlet jetty and beach. The surf is usually calm compared to Long Island and don’t see 10 foot rods on the jetty too often. I usually like taking one rod with me when fishing Boynton, walking the beach then hitting the jetty. Do you think this rod would be over kill or recommend maybe something smaller and lighter? I appreciate your expert opinion and advise!

Alberto, I am curious about your thoughts on the front wire tie loop placement on darters. I see yours on the Tactical Anglers are horizontal while many others are vertical. What do you see as the pros & cons to both. I have been experimenting with both & so far like the horizontal placement the best. thanks, Mike Fixter

Al , I will be moving down to florida this year . It’s come to my understanding that not all fishing lure used in long island waters will work in florida waters . My question is . Are there any lures used here on long island also work in florida . If so , which of my lures should I save and bring to florida with me that will be useful , especially colors . Rubber plastics , poppers , bucktails etc . Being from long island I have many different brands from Superstrike , Gibbs , storm , hody , bluefrog and Andrus bucktails etc . Which of all this type Brands will work in florida . Thanks .Jeff
