How come….
BySo far the snow looks like a nonevent in New York.
Not only that there is no snow by me but not even a dusting. Heading into the show in little while, waiting for those two angels to wake up and give daddy a smooch before he heads out.
Which brings me to a subject that I will go a into a bit more next week…something that makes me cringe and at the same time it gives me a sense of pride. I have that ying/yang relationship in my head, the selfish part always fights with the family part in my head. A constant battle that I am sure many go through.
I never get tired hearing how much people like my first book. I’ve had a fellow walk up to me and told me that he’s been fishing for 60 years and he never read anything like it. Ok, that’s cool but I told him that I know hundreds of guys who have this same info stored between their ears. The only difference is, they never put it on the paper. And its true. But its always cool to hear that you’ve done something “right” of throwing junk out there .
What does surprises me at the shows (and I’ve had at least 10 people ask this same question yesterday) is when people ask me “how do you do it”?
Huh?
When do you find the time to have a full time job, be a full time cook, kids chauffeur and their biggest fan in the stands? How about video, photography, books ,magazine, guiding, writing, blog (you dizzy yet
) contest, trips with friends, eel rigging and on and on.
I don’t know. Honest. I never been one to make excuses. I do feel that sleep is a waste of time. After all , world goes on while you sleep so if you sleep 8 hours, in the morning you are 8 hours behind those that didn’t sleep. Besides, you’ll sleep plenty when you are dead
lol
But man needs rest. I don’t know what the answer is and I don’t know why people are surprised. I put my wife and her needs first. Yes, unlike my wife, my kids are my blood but I didn’t marry my kids. I married my wife and hopefully she’ll stick around long after the kids are gone. After that, and sometimes in between is all the other stuff. I don’t think I do any more then any of you. The only unfortunate thing (for me) is that a lot of what I do is public. Other then youporn….LMAO
I think what makes it easy is that we (and I am sure Tommy feels the same) are doing something we love. This magazine is not created and designed to make either one of us into a publishing magnates. This is a labor of love, something we thought the surf fishing community deserves. That’s why the ads are as stunning as the rest of the magazine, because Tommy wanted the “look” to be equally impressive.
I think doing something that you love helps going the extra mile when it comes to effort. There was a time I’ve thought that I would like to earn a living from fishing. I’ve since changed my tune. I realized that doing anything fishing related for financial reason sucks all the joys out of you. Screw that.
Life is too short
Play (and fish ) hard
Zeno, the things spoken of today ring the bell of truth. Motivation is something that seperates success from failure many times. If you remember, I wrote on the blog weeks ago regarding the hoopla both you and Tommy have created. More so you than Tommy, because of your books. Just watch interviews from down to earth celebrities and you will see how lives change to some degree with fame. There will be copy cats trying to steal the spotlight in the future. I think personally that both you and Tommy might find fishing in the future to be different if not difficult some days. One day I am sure, you will look over your shoulder to find someone following you to the fishing holes. Big hellos and compliments are asome and should be taken with stride, but just watch that temper when a group of guys start following you guys everywhere (while fishing).
Good Stuff, both to you and Tommy Z. I got alot of respect for you both and your love for our sport is shown in your magazine.
I just got one question though? What does Fish ”HARD” mean? didnt you say a few weeks back you hated that?…. lol… just kididn ….. you guys are doin great things and I cant wait till next months edition of the magazine, I just hop eI am around to read it the first day it comes out, I got somthing on the burner over here but I am sure I will read it!!!!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend men !!!!!
People need to learn how to use their time wisely. Need to combine stuff to max use. My wife loves the beach but not fishing. Fishing Race Point is my best example. The wife loves Ptown. So spend the day on the beach (me sleeping half the time), have dinner in town, by then she is ready for bed while I fish. Kill two birds with one stone. Been doing this for 30-years and we both still love it. Average about 100 fishing nights a season and been married for 36-years.
Kevin
“play” is for me
“fish” is for you
everyone knows I don’t fish hard
Kids and Family come before fishing. Good for you Z
I always find the time for my kids, That means you give up fishing, golfing, etc. to watch or in my case coach my girls summer softball teams for the last 12 years. This summer is it for my youngest at 17. Then I will have tons of fishing and golfing time.
Hopefully they do the same for their kids.
Z Family dose come first. I am one of the luckiest men alive.I have a God that love’s me with all my imperfections,A wife that goes beyond being good to me.She spoils me.,kids that are all grown up now and still treat me as though i am some thing great. An ok paying job that i am soon going to leave do to retirement. From may to the middle of January I get to fish almost every day. I go before work and after work and most weekends and not all but most of any my vacations are based around fishing.while my kids were growing up they fished with me a lot and what a joy it was to see them mature right before my eyes and to see them grow to love the sport that brought so much joy and pleasure and peace into my life. And now my very understanding wife goes with me often. We have been together for 37 years and we are still going strong.Like you said our kids are our blood and that’s true. But long after our children leave the nest the wife will still be there. The more i look at my life the luckier i see my self.God ,wife ,kids And fishing I have it all.I might not have much money But im am still one of the riches and luckiest men a live.
Really enjoy your site and look forward to it every time I open my email. Also share your philosophy on life. Keep up the fine job of making so many fisherman happy.
Do what u love. Follow ur heart. Now I know why u might not guide.except 4 a few lucky stiffs.all I keep thinkin about are those charter capts in virginia. They ruined it b4 & their gonna do it again
time management, 5 hour energy and youporn go a long way
