Name that picture winner

That picture has a special place in my heart. I remember like it was yesterday. This was around the time when I just bought my 11-16 wide angle lens. Had to pay over retail to get it but I finally found it in some seedy shop in Brooklyn. I walked on to the beach and met Kurt there. I started shooting only to quickly realize that wide angle lenses made my subject look like an ant. So I got closer, and closer, and closer…until I couldn’t get any closer without interfering with his cast. The amazing part was that I could put a camera a foot from his knee and still get his whole body and 11 foot rod in the frame.
After few shots against the setting sun I got my “bend in the rod” shots but I remember what YoDude told me one day. “Those shots were cool when no one did them. Now they are dime a dozen”.
He was right as usual
So I asked Kurt if it would be ok if I stood in the water with my stupid expensive (for me) camera while he casts directly at me. After all, how many shots you ever see like that. So we did it few times and this was the best shot we got. He was tickled pink when I sent him the shot. We chatted about him writing for Surfcaster’s Journal and he was very excited about it.
We said goodbye, not knowing that next time we would meet would be at his funeral few months later. Fing cancer sucks. I wish I gave him a hug.
