Surf Fishing Tips from the Pros:
Steve Petri
This month’s feature sharpie is Steve Petri, inventor, custom rod builder, seminar speaker and surfcaster whose exploits are well known in the surf fishing community. He feels blessed that he was able to learn from one of Long Islands best, his dad. After all, it was under his father’s watchful eye in 1981, at the tender age of 17 on a Cape Cod beach Steve landed a 57 and a 69.08 lb bass on consecutive nights. This multi-talented fisherman is also an accomplished inventor who among other things created a Petri-fish rubber flounder lure. In addition he is a custom rod builder operating out of Bob’s Bait & Tackle in Copiague. Although two of his largest fish came out of Cape Cod beaches Steve also has two fish over 50 lbs to his credit from the LI surf and numerous 40’s.Let’s see if he will let us in on any of the strategies that has worked so well for him in the past.
Hello Steve. We all know July is a tough month for surfcasting. Tell us how do you approach it?
I would try to stick with the areas were the water is cooler; I wouldn’t even fish the back bay areas because of this. Stick with the oceanfront beaches. The last few years we had big bunker schools in Read More→

What do you say we pick a winner of A.O.K. Tackle giveaway in a day or two? Last chance to enter to win a great package of fish catching lures, courtesy of Steve Adams from AOK…don’t miss the interview with Steve in this issue of Surfcaster’s Journal Magazine either . We are working hard on September issue and I hope to have few surprises…ok, we are trying to work but between this oppressive heat, kids graduations and fishing…not much is getting done Spent most of the day drowning the sorrow after USA loss with my buddy Samuel Adams…I forgot that I don’t know how to drink…when I got up at 2 am to hit the suds I felt like an old man.
The dream season is continuing along New Jersey beaches while the rest of Northeast is not so fortunate. I did hear the rumors that Cape Cod beaches much, much more productive this spring then they usually are. I don’t know how long you have been fishing or are your spots undergoing changes over the years. I can only talk about spots that I fish, around Jones beach due to close proximity to my house. They never really were a great beaches to catch fish, certainly not when compared to some other locations but they are close, convenient and for the most part, consistent once you learn the wind and tides.
You got your regulars and few stranglers Read More→

I just read somewhere “What makes a good wetsuit bag”
Got me thinking.
I’ve been using my trusty 2 row VS bag for over 10 years. It still takes licking and keeps ticking. Over the years I tried bags from different manufactures and none were really suited for the way I fish. Don’t get me wrong, these were good, quality bags, just didn’t fit my style of fishing. I prefer a full rigged eel pouch along the whole length of a front of the bag that can fir at least 4 twenty inch eels with 9/0 double hooks. I know, its asking for a lot.
But Nick from http://www.ebbpointsurffishing.com/ made a bag exactly as I envisioned it. I am more then trilled to just be able to buy it. But this is not about my bag, its about a bag for a wetsuiter, something I am not. I wear wetsuits on occasion but for full
time westuiter there really is only one bag. One with 3 inch drain holes that fits inside a wetsuit.
It just hast been made yet…lmao
People are kidding themselves with these thin one row bags or little square bags because they will all take in water. Now, is it a “belt” bag much better then over the shoulder bag for them? Absolutely. But the best thing for a westuiter is a bag full of eels and few Lure Tubes http://luretubes.com/index.html on their belt. Very few full time wetsuiters go through the headaches of swimming to the rocks and then toss plugs. At least most that I know.
My last night in Cutty I swam to the rock and stayed on it for a whole tide but I never opened my bag and took the plug out. Instead I tossed rigged eels all night (I’ll give you a full story in my new book if I ever finish it). To be perfectly honest, what I should off done is I should off took a pouch I could attach to my belt and left the bag at home. Heck, no need to worry about bluefish. I haven’t caught one there yet….
love when i am right

I like a lot of love that A.O.K. is reciving. Steve is a real good guy who makes quality stuff that catch fish
I just endured a wicked storm that lasted all of 5 minutes but left a trail of destruction behind it. Cant mess with mother nature…
I have to tell you, I am very surprised with number of entries in STRIPERTHON 2010 contest for June. You guys cant catch a fish over 25lb or you don’t have anyone to snap a picture with you? Or third and most likely…when you catch a 25lb+ fish you take it home. No need to feel bad about it, been there done that. I am just surprised by lack of entries…you still have a week in June
Its making me wonder two things, first, is there a lack of fish of that size?
Or have we, the surfcasters. really more about words then action?
I know I’ll offend a lot of people by saying this but I am speaking from the experience…
For years I preached conservation and that was all fine and dandy as long as I didn’t catch anything big. But as soon as I got a bigger fish a little devil would get on my shoulder and tell me that maybe I should just take this bad boy(or girl) home. And many times I did. I got out of that habit over the years. The picture below, that fish was released as soon as the photo was snapped and that was one of the smaller ones. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not against keeping you legal catch, I am just trying to figure out if that is the reason we are lacking pictures,. After all, Its hard to release the fish you just filleted. …Lol Read More→
